Commentary

Schwarz's medallic portrait of Martin Tucher, a patrician of Nuremberg, is preserved in a wood version (Staatliche Museen, Münzkabinett, Berlin; with a later label dating it to 1519) and in two metal types. According to Kastenholz, the latter could be aftercasts of a lost medal replicated with significant epigraphic changes. In fact, the example reproduced by Will in 1766 has an obverse inscription, SIC VOLVITVR AETAS, that is missing in the present version. A manuscript note by Schwarz referring to the sitter ("Martein Tucher LIX Iar alt. / [1]519") can be read on the reverse of a drawing that the sculptor made in Nuremberg (Staatsbibliothek, Bamberg, inv. no. IA50: Kastenholz 2006, no. 153). However, it is unclear if this inscription can be referred to a lost preparatory drawing for Tucher's medal or whether the latter was made on a specific occasion.
