Commentary

Johann Friedrich was called the "Magnanimous" for his dignity and strength during trials that included imprisonment and being stripped of his title and territories by the forces of his enemy Maurice, Duke of Saxony. Johann Friedrich was a loyal supporter of Martin Luther and the Lutheran faith. The portrait is based on painted and woodcut portraits by Lucas Cranach the Elder. The medal has been described as possibly marking a birthday.
