CommentaryThis medal, possibly produced in support of efforts at reconciliation between the new Protestant Church and the Church of Rome, may have been commissioned by Maurice, Duke of Saxony, whose arms appear on the reverse. The text up to the word MAIESTAS is taken from the Athanasian Creed, a statement of Catholic belief centered on the Holy Trinity (a doctrine accepted by Protestants). The second part is from the hymn Benedicta sit semper Sancta Trinitas (Victoria and Albert Museum, online database of medals).
