CommentaryThis medal commemorates Dürer's death (which occurred on April 6, not April 8, as stated on the reverse) and is dedicated to his "Manes"—he name by which the ancient Romans designated the souls of the dead as gods of the underworld. Gebel matched this new reverse with the obverse he had modeled for his Dürer medal of 1527. The latter is documented as his work in a letter from Andreas Rüttel to Willibald Pirckheimer.
