Elisabeth, Duchess of Braunschweig-Calenberg (1510–1558)

Elisabeth, daughter of the Elector of Brandenburg Joachim I and wife of Duke Erich the Elder, was widowed in 1540, at which point she ruled as guardian of her twelve-year-old son Erich and introduced Protestant reform to her territories. This medal is paired with one depicting her late husband. In 1545, a version of Elisabeth's medal was struck and bears that date, which may commemorate the year her son assumed power.
