Pendant Clock
The silver dial plate of this watch is finely engraved with a gilt-brass chapter ring, roman numerals at the hours, and fleur-de-lis-type marks on the half hours. The area outside the chapter ring has a floral and foliate design with figures playing musical instruments: for example, at five o’clock, a gentleman playing a flute, behind whom is a soldier with a pike; at seven o’clock, a gentleman playing a drum followed by a soldier with a sword. The center of the dial illustrates an army encampment with a group of soldiers and a ruler wearing a laurel wreath; a figure in the background is committing suicide with a sword. The identification of these scenes is unclear. The sides of the case are silver, delicately engraved and pierced to emit the sound of a bell.
