Commentary

The Earl of Leicester, a favorite of Elizabeth I of England and infamously arrogant, was recalled from his post as governor of the United Provinces for behaving poorly, enacting policies that ran contrary to the instructions of the queen, and arousing suspicion and frustration in the Dutch, who complained to Elizabeth of his conduct. Leicester, embittered, produced this medal, which he distributed among his friends; it is unclear whether it was made in the Low Countries or in England, following his return.
