Pocket Watch
Gold watches were sought after throughout eighteenth-century Europe. In England around 1750, repoussé was in fashion for luxury watches. John Gastrille mastered the technique on the case for this watch by Thomas Mudge, one of the greatest watchmakers in eighteenth-century England. Apprenticed to the celebrated clock, watch, and instrument maker George Graham, Mudge opened his own business, Dial and One Crown, on Fleet Street in London in 1750. Over the next twenty years, he made clocks and watches of the highest quality, incorporating the various technical innovations he had developed.
