Francesco da Sangallo (Francesco Giamberti)

(Italian, 1494–1576)
Place ActiveFlorence, Italy, Europe
BiographyMember of an artistic family which included notable architects and sculptors, Francesco may have worked both as architect and military engineer, but he is known primarily as a sculptor in marble. He was a pupil of his father, Giuliano, and he assisted Andrea Sansovino with sculpture for the Santa Casa at Loreto. His first important commission, dated 1526, was a Madonna and Child with St. Anne for the Orsanmichele, Florence. Later sepulchral monuments by Francesco were sometimes eerily expressive and realistic.
