Antonio Pollaiuolo

(Italian, 1431/1432–1498)
Place ActiveFlorence, Italy, Europe
BiographyAntonio Benci, called “del Pollaiuolo” after his father’s poultry business, excelled in virtually all the arts: painting, sculpture, drawing, enamelwork, objects in gold and silver, as well as designs for everything from embroidery to architecture. Like his contemporary Verrocchio, Pollaiuolo was a favorite of the Medici; Lorenzo de’ Medici once described him as “the principal master of the city.” He also worked for the Sforza of Milan, and late in his career he went to Rome, where, with the assistance of his brother Piero, he made the magnificent bronze tombs in St. Peter’s for Popes Sixtus IV and Innocent VIII.
