Johannes Stabius (1462–1522)
In 1502, the humanist Johannes Stöbere, who later took the Latinized name Stabius, became a poet laureate in the "Collegium poetarum et mathematicorum," established in Vienna by Emperor Maximilian I, and in 1503 was appointed court historian. The death of Maximilian in 1519 and Charles V's disinterest in Stabius's work marked the end of his career. This is the only authentic portrait of the humanist and was most likely designed by Albrecht Dürer when they were both in Nuremberg to collaborate on the Triumphal Arch series of woodcuts. A possible author of the medal is Hans Schwarz, who was in Nuremberg in 1519–20 and from whom Dürer had commissioned his own portrait medal.
