Commentary

Alongside the production of pieces decorated with lambrequins, Rouen potters continued to cater to Europe's passion for Asia by producing pieces with Chinese motifs including pagodas, Chinese figures, flora, and fauna, as well as Asian-style landscapes. These motifs were not painted in blue and white, as they had been earlier, but in polychromeinspired by colorful Chinese porcelains, and by Japanese Imari ware, characterized by extensive floral motifs painted in radiant blue and iron-red.
