Mantel Clock
An exact model of this clock—but with a movement by Charles Athanase Pinon (now at the Château de Versailles on long-term loan from the Mobilier National)—was delivered in 1773 to the apartment of the Count of Artois, brother of Louis XVI, at the Château de Versailles. The clock’s sculptural elements representing the Triumph of Love over Time were adapted specifically to match the theme of the young prince’s apartment: gallant conquests. The present clock was probably made shortly after, with a movement by the celebrated Ferdinand Berthoud, appointed clockmaker to the king in 1773. Its provenance is unknown.
