Chimneypiece

The prototype of this chimneypiece with two large female satyrs was almost certainly created in bleu turquin for Louise-Jeanne de Durfort, Duchess of Mazarin, and placed in her Parisian residence (opposite the side table, 1915.5.59). The provenance of this example is unknown. It was purchased in 1916 to furnish the Frick’s Fragonard Room, where it stands today. In 1916, the marble top was replaced and the depth of the mantel increased to accommo­date the display of the bust of the Countess of Cayla by Jean-Antoine Houdon.
