Commentary

The identity of Odet de Coligny is ascertained by the close relationship of this image to a number of contemporary portraits, especially a drawing by François Clouet at Chantilly that may have been its direct model. A member of a family that later led Protestant forces in the Wars of Religion, de Coligny was excommunicated in 1563 and fought in the Battle of Saint-Denis in 1567.
