Commentary

This composition is adapted from an Adoration of the Magi enameled twice by the Master of the Orléans Triptych, under whom the Master of the Large Foreheads probably worked before establish­ing his own workshop. Slanted eyes, puffy eyelids, and high, rounded foreheads characterize his production. The composition borrows many details from a print of around 1480−85 by the Netherlandish Master IAM, in which the main scene is set before ruins that evoke Solomon’s Temple, said to have been destroyed when Christ was born.
