CommentaryBorn to Grenoble bourgeoisie, Marie de Vignon, Marquise of Treffort, was famous for her beauty. In 1591, she became the mistress of François de Bonne, Duke of Lesdiguières and governor of Grenoble. In 1617, after the deaths of their spouses—Lesdiguières's wife in 1608 and Marie's husband, murdered, in 1613—the pair married. This medal was probably produced a year after Lesdiguières commissioned from Richier the tomb for his first wife (1612) and is his only signed work.
