Commentary

This medal celebrates Parkhurst in his role as Warden of the Mint, to which he had been appointed first by James I, then by Charles I. Located in Shrewsbury at the beginning of the Civil War, the mint was moved to Oxford in 1642, the year it was seized by Parliament and Parkhurst, a royalist, was ousted as warden. He was returned to his former position in 1660 under Charles II.
