Giambologna (Jean de Boulogne)

Giovanni Bologna (born Jean Boulogne), who came from Douai in Flanders, spent two years in Rome before settling in Florence in 1553 for the remainder of his life. He entered the service of the Medici, becoming their official sculptor, and acquired an international reputation for his statues both in marble and in bronze. His great celebrity necessitated a workshop with assistants so skilled that they could execute his sophisticated designs in the style and with the technical expertise of their master.
