BiographyLargely self-taught, Romney practiced in London after traveling to Paris and Italy. Although he never joined the Royal Academy, he became one of the most fashionable portraitists of his time. Romney's ambitions to be a history painter, evident in his many drawings, were never realized in his painted work.Source: Art in The Frick Collection: Paintings, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, New York: Harry N.
