CommentaryIn addition to being chief physician to the Medicean grand dukes Ferdinando II and Cosimo III and a zoologist, Francesco Redi was renowned as a poet and philosopher. The reverse reflects the idea that poetry and literature have the power to defeat time and last forever, as visualized by Minerva trampling upon Time and by the personification of Eternity pointing to the ouroboros, another symbol of eternity, and further declared by the quote from Horace.
