Mary Tudor, Queen of England and Ireland (b. 1516; r. 1553–58)
Probably commissioned in 1554 shortly after Philip and Mary's wedding, along with a medal of Philip II of Spain, this is one of Trezzo's most spectacular medals. It may derive from Mary's court portrait by Anthonis Mor (Museo del Prado, Madrid). The jewel is possibly the diamond pendant with pearl that Philip sent to her shortly before their wedding. The reverse symbolizes the peace brought to England under Mary with symbols of stability (cube), unity (clasping hands), and justice (scales), as well as the divine blessing (symbolized by the radiating sun) obtained through the reconciliation with Rome in contrast to the unrest and conflict of the past represented behind the figure of Peace. Other known examples include the artist's signature below the bust.
