CommentaryThis medal (probably the last of Sperandio's three medals of the sitter) reflects the ambition of Bentivoglio, Lord of Bologna, to assert himself as the signore of Bologna and presents him as a powerful military leader during the period of his greatest authority. In November 1506, Bentivoglio was forced into exile. The reverse is a pastiche of Pisanello's medals of Gianfrancesco Gonzaga and Filippo Maria Visconti.
