Commentary

This medal commemorates the Siege of Riga (Latvia) in 1621, as the beginning of Gustavus Adolphus's campaign against Poland. The reverse inscription is a chronogram for the date. The initials on the reverse, H W, are those of Heinrich Wulff, who was mint master at Riga from 1625 to 1659. Hermann Maué states that the medal was produced in 1641 to commemorate the events of 1621.
