Commentary

This medal commemorates the defeat of Russian forces at Friedland by Napoleon's Grand Army, a victory that led to the Treaty of Tilsit, effectively ending the War of the Fourth Coalition (October 1806July 1807). During the battle, half of the Russian army had been forced to retreat to the village of Friedland, where Napoleon's men slaughtered them at close quarters. More than twenty thousand Russians were killed. The reverse is after a design by Antoine-Denis Chaudet.
