CommentaryValette, general of the French infantry in 1585 and admiral of France in 1587, was a favorite of Henri III. This medal probably commemorates a successful diplomatic mission to Metz and Strasbourg in 1605–7. The allegory on the reverse shows the French royal lion protecting a beautiful flower from Deceit (the fox) and Discord (the old woman).
