Commentary

The central panel depicts Christ on a cross between two thieves on Mount Golgotha. A Roman soldier on horseback is plunging a spear into his side. On the right are Mary Magdalene and the Virgin supported by St. John. A Franciscan identified by the inscription at the top prays before them. The right and left wings of the triptych are divided into panels representing twelve sibyls holding the instruments of the Passion. The back of the triptych's frame is painted. On the central part are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabetalpha and omegain yellow pigment. The scene represented on the two wings depicts St. Francis receiving the stigmata.
