Commode

Originally, this commode was almost certainly covered with panels of turtle shell and brass marquetry. Considering the fragility of Boulle marquetry, it is likely that the original panels deteriorated beyond repair and were replaced by the current wood marquetry veneer. The commode retains its early eighteenth-century shape, which is similar to a drawing attributed to André-Charles Boulle now at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. The designs and quality of the chased and gilt-bronze mounts are also characteristic of the work of the celebrated cabinetmaker to Louis XIV and date from the early eighteenth century.
