Commentary

Filippo de' Medici, a distant cousin of Cosimo de' Medici the Elder, was archbishop of Pisa. The flower-like forms on the border of the obverse may represent tassels suspended from an archbishop's hat. The reverse composition of the Last Judgment is represented with the traditional iconography and, with the saved on the right of Christ and the damned on his left, presents the usual convention that Bertoldo's pupil Michelangelo would later adopt in his Last Judgment. James David Draper proposed a dating of the medal to Filippo's period in Rome in 146869, when he was positioning himself to be appointed cardinal.
