Commentary

This medal celebrates the rule of Frederick Henry as Stadtholder of the Netherlands and the 1642 arrival in the Netherlands of Princess Mary of England as the bride of Prince William of Orange; the two married in England in 1641. A variant omits the exergue inscriptions. At Münster on January 30, 1648, peace was achieved between Spain and the United Provinces; the medal may have been reissued or altered with the exergue inscriptions at this point to reassert the marriage and authority of the House of Orange. The wattle fence, the hollandse tuin, is often used to symbolize the United Provinces as a secure enclosure within which prosperity flourishes.
