Master Printmakers of Northern Europe

Master Printmakers of Northern Europe: Dürer, Rembrandt, Van Dyck

Showcasing Northern printmaking from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this room features works by the German artist Albrecht Dürer, the Dutch artist Rembrandt, and the Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck. The works on view exemplify the diversity of techniques and visual effects possible in intaglio printmaking, where lines are incised on a metal plate, usually of copper. These virtuosic examples of engraving, etching, and drypoint circulated widely, and were coveted by collectors from early on.
