Bertoldo di Giovanni
Date: (1420/1430–1491)
Place Active: Europe, Florence
School: Florentine
Biography: Like Verrocchio and Pollaiuolo, Bertoldo spent most of his life in Florence and enjoyed close ties to the Medici household. In his early years a disciple of Donatello, Bertoldo in turn bridged the generations to Michelangelo, to whom he is said to have offered guidance in the Medici Gardens, where many Florentine artists studied the collection of ancient and modern sculpture. Bertoldo’s range, however, was limited, for he evidently confined his attention to sculpture alone, and to reliefs, medals, and small bronzes rather than works on a monumental scale.
