Commentary

Pierre Courteys’s dark palette and stern figures set a sober tone for these eight Old Testament scenes. The night sky separates the Falling of Quails in the Desert from the Gathering of Manna, seen on the front and back of the curved lid. Themes concerning Moses join these episodes to the main scenes at front and back: the Feast of the Passover in Egypt and Shaphan reading to King Josiah from the Book of the Law of the Lord given by Moses. Various biblical episodes decorate the two ends.
